Critiques of tourism are commonplace, but virtually all of them take e
ither a Western or State-oriented perspective. Using exemplary Muslim,
pacific and futures narratives, this essay aims to provide a diversit
y of views of the motivations of tourism and the development thereof.
It suggests questions that need to be asked if tourism is to be more e
quitably planned and speculates on alternative ways in which tourism c
ould develop in the future.
