Abstract
The right-hand terminal DNA segment (53,018 bp) of the variola(smallpo x) virus strain India-1967 was sequenced. Computer analysis revealed 5 9 open reading frames; the genome region examined had multiple differe nces from those of vaccinia virus strains Copenhagen and Western Reser ve, but was highly homologous to variola virus strain Harvey. The puta tive functions of viral proteins and the possible influence of the rev ealed differences on the orthopoxvirus properties are discussed.
