Abstract
The presented models are applications of classical optimal control met hods in biology. The growth of plants and animals are described by non linear ordinary differential equations. Biologically justified limitat ions provide additional inequality constraints on the control function s and the state variable. The solutions of the optimization models are control functions which either maximize the amounts of energy allocat ed to reproduction or minimize the age of achieving adult body size.
