A study has been made of Pu(IV) stabilization by electrochemically gen
erated nitrous acid. In 4 M nitric acid solutions containing 5 x 10(-2
) M Ce and (8.5-9) x 10(-2) M Pu, Pu(VI) is reduced fast (for 1.1-1.6
h) and completely (99.6-99.93%) to Pu(IV) at a current density of 1 A
dm(-2). A probable mechanism of reduction Pu(VI) to Pu(IV) has been pr
oposed.
