Abstract
The in-plane fracture toughness of tough, ductile sheets such as hands heets of softwood kraft pulps can be measured, independent of specimen size, by the ''essential work of fracture'' method. The details of th e method are described, and the validity of the approach is demonstrat ed by comparing results with theoretical estimates.
