M. Oehmichen, MERCY KILLING - DEATH ON DEMAND - ON THE BORDERLINE BETWEEN MEDICINE AND LAW, Zeitschrift fur Gerontologie und Geriatrie, 28(4), 1995, pp. 273-278
In medicine and law the ethical values confront one another: ''death w
ith dignity'' (''allowing to die'') versus the ''right to life'' (''pr
eservation of life''). An individual's right to self-determination con
flicts with the physician's obligation to preserve life. The problemat
ic is discussed from the standpoints of both medicine and law, and cur
rent developments in the medical profession and legal practice are pre
sented.
