An InGaAsP optical waveguide has been used as a combined nonlinear mix
er and detector in an autocorrelator for measuring the pulse width of
1.5 mu m wavelength optical pulses. Two-photon absorption in the waveg
uide provided an autocorrelation current at average-power peak-power p
roducts as low as 0.08(mW)(2), thus giving >1 orders of magnitude impr
ovement in sensitivity compared to conventional autocorrelators.
