The goal of this article is to provide theoretical underpinnings for r
eminiscence by reviewing and evaluating previous research, and integra
ting it within a theoretical framework. Using a continuity theory pers
pective (Atchley, 1989), propositions are generated which may facilita
te reminiscence research across the life span. Three global functions
of reminiscence are derived from continuity theory (private, social, a
nd cognitive functions) and are used as a foundation for the creation
of seven propositions.
