In paper manufacture the appearance of cross-direction stripes is call ed 'barring'. In order to elucidate the manner of creation of such bar s, vibration investigations were carried out on a smoothing calender. On the basis of these measurements a dynamic model was developed, desc ribing the mechanism of barring. Various solutions of the problem were tried out on this model and later tested out during practical product ion. Most effective proved to be a mo re wear resistant surface oi the roll covers.
