Abstract
Acoustic plane-wave scattering from a circular aperture in a thick har d screen is reexamined. The Hankel transform is applied to express the scattered field in the spectral domain and the boundary conditions ar e enforced to obtain simultaneous equations for the transmitted field inside the thick hard screen. The simultaneous equations are solved to represent the transmitted and scattered fields in series forms. Numer ical computations are performed To illustrate the behavior of scatteri ng and transmission in terms of the aperture size, frequency, and inci dent angle. It is found that scattering from a circular pit exhibits t he resonance versus the pit depth when the pit radius is larger than a wavelength. The numerical comparisons to other available data show ex cellent agreement. The presented series solution is numerically effici ent and general in that it includes scattering from a circular apertur e, pit, and semi-infinite pipe altogether.
