Objective: The aim of this paper is to describe the outcome of fluoxet
ine treatment of depressed patients with HIV infection. Method: An ope
n study was made of 20 patients with varying stages of HIV infection t
reated for depression with fluoxetine. Results: 15 of 20 patients impr
oved with fluoxetine treatment; the drug was generally well tolerated,
with no significant drug-drug interactions. Conclusions: Fluoxetine a
ppears to be effective for the treatment of depression in patients wit
h HIV infection.
