Abstract
The simultaneous emission and detection of radiation with a semiconduc tor laser is investigated. Measured signal-to-noise ratios of up to 56 dB demonstrate that self-detecting devices are adequate for sensor ap plications with discrete measurands. We observed a strong polarization dependence, which can cause response fluctuations, and suggest method s to minimize these fluctuations. This technique could be used for low er-cost sensors without splitters and detectors.
