Abstract
Rietveld refinement using neutron powder diffraction data for the low- temperature form of strontium tantalum oxide, SrTa4O11, resulted in R( wp) = 3.10%. The structure is of the CaTa4O11 type and consists of lay ers of Ta(2)O-7 pentagonal bipyramids sharing edges, as found in U3O8. Between the layers lie Sr atoms with distorted cubic coordination geo metry and Ta(1) atoms with distorted octahedral coordination geometry.
