We have developed a novel maximum likelihood method dubbed IRIS (image
reconstruction with increased sampling) for reconstructing images tha
t have been blurred by a known point-spread function and recorded on a
CCD detector. The IRIS method allows the reconstructed images to be r
epresented on a finer grid than that defined by the CCD detector. We i
llustrate the method on images of the solar corona obtained with the s
oft X-ray telescope aboard the Yohkoh satellite. The IRIS method can b
e adapted easily for use with other imaging systems to provide superre
solved reconstructed images.
