A new mutant of cultivated barley, which is characterized by well-deve
loped glumes with true awns, is described. The mutation is recessive a
nd monofactorial. The forms homozygous for this mutation produce consi
derably lower yields than the original forms. In the mutant, the prote
in and lysine content in grain is significantly higher than in origina
l forms. This fact is of significant interest for breeding.
