Abstract
In the present paper we determine the greatest (resp. maximal) transit ive solution of a fuzzy equation (resp. inequality). Such problem aris es, among others, when we approximate arbitrary fuzzy relations by tra nsitive ones from below. A sketch of extension of these results to int erval-valued fuzzy sets is given as well.
