A computer simulation of the burning of large woody natural fuels has
been created. The model simulates flaming combustion of large woody su
rface fuels but includes the influence of smoldering duff on this burn
ing. This paper describes calibration of empirical constants in the mo
del using data from laboratory crib burns and from prescribed burns in
harvest debris and in natural fuel accumulations. The calibrated mode
l reproduced laboratory crib burning rates and natural fuel loading re
ductions with acceptable accuracy.
