The spin polarization of photoemitted valence-band electrons from poly
crystalline Fe films shows good qualitative agreement with the calcula
ted spin-resolved density of states (SRDOS) of bcc Fe. The quantitativ
e differences are accounted for by the surface contribution to the pho
toelectron intensity. Simple subtraction of calculated bulk Fe SRDOS f
rom the photoemission spectra yield an experimental surface SRDOS that
agrees well with the calculation for Fe(001) and Fe(110). The Fe surf
ace spin polarization is enhanced by (12+/-8)% over the bulk, consiste
nt with theoretical predictions.
