Peroxidase from the wood-degrading fungus Phellinus igniarius and the
lignin-forming acidic peroxidase from tobacco Nicotiana sylvestris wer
e isolated and characterized for the first time. Properties of the iso
lated enzymes and their substrate specificity were studied in comparis
on with the alkaline peroxidases from horseradish roots and alfalfa ce
ll culture. The novel fungal peroxidase was shown to be neither lignin
peroxidase nor Mn-dependent peroxidase; it belongs to a class of secr
eted fungal peroxidases of the classic plant type. Similarity in the p
roperties of the fungal and tobacco peroxidases is noted.
