Trace element contents (Mn, Fe, Sr) of a set of Lower Carboniferous br
achiopod shell fragments have been measured using the Bochum proton mi
croprobe. The resulting data are in good agreement with ICP measuremen
ts of the same shells and serve as a quantitative criterion to constra
in the preservation state of the sample material for oxygen isotope an
alyses. They thus help to interpret correctly the isotope data. Linesc
ans and elemental maps yield information on the lateral distribution o
f trace elements.
