Abstract
The phagocyte enzyme NADPH oxidase generates superoxide essential for antimicrobial defense; its genetic defects cause the immunodeficiency disorder chronic granulomatous disease. B lymphocytes and certain othe r nonphagocytes also express NADPH oxidase. Molecular approaches allow new ways to study the enzyme and promise to uncover why nonphagocytic cells express NADPH oxidase.
