Abstract
An empirical thermodynamic model for predicting the first phase format ion in binary diffusion couples is described. The model suggests a sui table modification to the existing effective heat of formation model ( EHF) by quantitatively describing a congruency factor. The model predi cts correctly the phase formation in several silicides, germinides and metal-metal binary systems, which otherwise could not be explained by EHF model.
