Abstract
The status and trends ain the developments if naval steels are briefly outlined. A simple alloy design approach for new Ultra Low Carbon Bai nitic (ULCB) steels for naval applications is presented. This paper pr esents transmission electron microscopic studies and the basic mechani cal test results for two such ULCB steels in the as rolled condition. A simple hot rolling schedule was used to produce a refined microstruc ture. The steels are typically granular bainitic. The yield strength i s about 100 ksi and the Charpy energy values are 70-80 J at 60 degrees C. The microstructure and the mechanical properties are discussed in terms of the known features of bainite and the chemistry.
