This paper reviews various applications of remote sensing and image an
alysis in plant pathology. It describes technical methods and their po
ssibilities, but also emphasizes the biological prerequisites and rest
rictions of practical applications. The subject area comprises many no
ndestructive and noninvasive methods to detect and assess plant diseas
es and stress objectively and cost-effectively, even though to date we
cannot identify the specific cause of the damage. As a supplement to
conventional methods, these new methods have great potential to facili
tate and increase accuracy and precision in plant pathoiogical researc
h.
