Electrooptical properties of 4,4'-bis(cyanobiphenyl)oxyalkanes in diox
ane and benzene were studied using nonequilibrium electrical birefring
ence. The dependence of molar Kerr constant on the length of oxyalkane
chain was found to be nonmonotonic. This pattern was explained by the
odd-even effect on intramolecular orientational polar and anisotropic
order. Effects of equilibrium and kinetic flexibility of alkylene cha
in on the magnitude and sign of the observed birefringence and on the
extent of correlation in orientations of mesogenic fragments of the mo
lecular chain in electrical field were discussed.
