The centrifugal sedimentation and diffusion of macromolecules of cyano
ethyl hydroxypropyl cellulose (CEHPC) with the average degree of subst
itution 2.4 +/- 0.3 was studied using dilute CEHPC solutions in variou
s solvents. In the range of molecular masses 130 x 10(3) - 580 x 10(3)
, the sedimentation coefficient and intrinsic viscosity of CEHPC at 26
degrees C are related to the degree of polymerization by the formulas
s(0) = (6.0 +/- 0.7) x 10-(14)Z(0.40+/-0.02)c and [eta] = (1.4 +/- 0.
3)Z(0.89+/-0.03) ml/g. The equilibrium rigidity of a macromolecule is
characterized by the Kuhn segment A = (430 +/- 50) Angstrom and the pa
rameter of retardation sigma = 6 of intramolecular motion. The hydrody
namic diameter of the chain is d = (23 +/- 6) Angstrom.
