The paper discusses a method for residual stress measurement in the di
rection transverse to the welded seam. The residual stresses are measu
red by means of electrochemical removal and the simultaneous measureme
nt of strain using a strain gauge, The method is simple and enables me
asurement over the whole cross-section of the welded specimen: this ab
ility is the most significant feature of this method. The method enabl
es optimisation of the welding parameters. It is possible to analyse t
he influence of each individual pass of the welding electrode on the r
esidual stress distribution, the latter being very important in dynami
cally loaded welded parts. The present method for residual stress meas
urement is not only useful for the welding of parts, but is helpful al
so in a variety of other applications.
