Abstract
The moss Barbula agraria Hedw., a discordant element in the genus Barb ula, is recognized as distinct at the generic level by upgrading the m onotypic Barbula sect. Hyophiladelphus C. Mull. Cladistic analysis sup ports a removal to the subfamily Pottioideae wherein Hyophiladelphus i s related to one of two circum-Tethyan groups of genera. This study de tails the several necessary methodological steps for reclassifying thi s problematic species.
