The moss Barbula agraria Hedw., a discordant element in the genus Barb
ula, is recognized as distinct at the generic level by upgrading the m
onotypic Barbula sect. Hyophiladelphus C. Mull. Cladistic analysis sup
ports a removal to the subfamily Pottioideae wherein Hyophiladelphus i
s related to one of two circum-Tethyan groups of genera. This study de
tails the several necessary methodological steps for reclassifying thi
s problematic species.
