Abstract
Halogen doping effects on the third-order nonlinear optical properties
of bis(dimethylglyoximato)nickel(II), Ni(dmg)(2), which has a one-dim
ensional backbone of metal chains, were examined, Ni(dmg)(2) showed 10
(-12) esu order of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility chi((3)) b
y three-photon resonance at the d(z)(2)-p: transition band. Exposing t
he Ni(dmg)(2) film to chlorine or bromine gas induced a red shift of t
he d(x)(2)-p: transition band and considerable enhancement. of the opt
ical nonlinearity. In particular, chlorine doping led to two-odd order
s of enhancement of the chi((3)) values (10(-10) esu order). The dopin
g effects are discussed in relation to the electron delocalization in
the linear metal chains.
