Abstract
A controlled spot-size laser diode, which can vary its near-field beam
size by means of an electric signal, is demonstrated for use in high-
quality laser printers. The laser has a flared stripe near the front f
acet and a twin injection stripe modulator at the base of the flare, T
he ratio of the maximum and minimum near-field spot sizes is 1:2.1 whe
n the total operating current is 140 mA.
