Abstract
The current specification of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials do es not specify any analysis method fo r the base plate design of span-wire-traffic-signal-poles. A simplifie d analysis method is developed here using finite element analysis for 28 signal poles, with calibration of the models by full-scale load tes ting. This method decomposes the base plate into three elementary comp onents corresponding to respective critical regions of stress concentr ation. It is consistent with the allowable stress design concept of th e current design code.
