Phlegmonous enterocolitis is a rarely encountered and almost universal
ly fatal bacterial infection seen most often in the alcoholic populati
on. Despite being first described in 1842, fewer than 60 cases have be
en reported. The role of surgical management in this condition is unkn
own. We present a case of phlegmonous enterocolitis with a successful
outcome after total colectomy.
