A fundamental study has been conducted on Fe78B13Si9 metallic thin rib
bon in order to understand the changes in the properties and structure
s of the glass as a function of Cr and Ni-Mo additions. The separate a
dditions of Cr and Ni-Mo were successful in producing two new metallic
thin glasses with the compositions Fe77Cr2B16Si5 and Fe74Ni4Mo3B17Si2
The study was focused on evaluating the physical and magnetic propert
ies of these glasses with respect to the Cr and Ni-Mo additions. In ad
dition, characterization of the internal and the surface structures of
the glasses was conducted using transmission electron microscopy and
scanning tunneling microscopy, respectively. A comparison between the
internal and surface structures of the glasses was carried out on both
amorphous and crystalline forms. As a result, a correlation between t
he properties and the structures of the glasses was established.
