Abstract
A cell-free system that mimics mitotic fragmentation of Golgi stacks h as provided a working model for the disassembly process. Two distinct pathways, one COP-dependent and one COP-independent, act on Golgi stac ks to give rise to two types of end products: transport vesicles and l arger, more heterogeneous vesicles and tubules. We suggest that both m itotic end products result from enhanced fission of Golgi membranes un der conditions where membrane fusion is generally inhibited.
