Mammal data and material were collected during a short stay in the Peo
ple's Democratic Republic of Laos in the winter of 1993-1994. Most dat
a are from the southern Sekong Province and the northwestern Hongsa Sp
ecial Zone. from where practically nothing has been previously reporte
d. Many localities are new, and add to our knowledge of species distri
butions. Of particular interest are Megaerops niphanae and Taphozous s
accolaimus, which are reported from Laos for the first time, some new
localities for Pygarhrix nemaeus; two new records of Prionodon pardico
lor; reports on Panthera tigris and Nemorhaedus sumatraensis; and reco
rds of Leopoldamys edwardsi and L. sabanus, Maxomys moi, Berylmys bowe
rsii which is new for the Sekong Province region, and Niviventer cf. t
enaster which is new for Laos.
