In this paper we discuss the nomenclature and criteria for defining dy
skinesias. We propose using uniform terminology and classification to
facilitate clinical and scientific communication. Next to the clinical
examination the neurophysiological methods are of value in establishi
ng the diagnosis when dealing with an involuntary movement. We summari
ze the main characteristics of some idiopathic dystonic disorders desc
ribed in recent years and stress the importance of molecular genetics.
Magnetic resonance imaging and metabolic analyses are the methods of
first choice when a symptomatic dystonia is suspected.
