An efficient planning of radio communication systems, line-of-sight ra
dio links as well as cellular radio systems, needs powerful methods fo
r modelling electromagnetic wave propagation. Semi-empirical and ray-o
ptical wave propagation models do not totally meet all requirements. T
herefore full wave models based on the very efficient Parabolic Equati
on Method are described. For tile first time they are applied to the w
ave propagation modelling in large areas. A comparison of calculated a
nd measured path loss values in a wide frequency band demonstrates the
ir superior properties. Therefore these models are best suited for cal
culations in critical rural environments or for a verification and an
improvement of simple wave propagation models.
