Abstract
The vanadium(V) catalysed oxidation of 5-ketogluconic acid by air occu rs readily only in neutral or alkaline solution. In the presence of ph osphate the oxidation takes place in acidic media as well. In alkaline berate buffer the oxidation is completely blocked. In alkaline carbon ate buffer the oxidation is fast and yields tartaric acid with much hi gher selectivity than in alkaline phosphate buffer solutions of the sa me pH.
