Based on Stroh formalism we derive a novel and convenient scheme for d
etermining the elastic fields of periodic inclusions embedded in an an
isotropic medium. The solutions are valid not only for plane problems
but also for antiplane problems and the problems whose inplane and ant
iplane deformations couple each other. The elastic fields in inclusion
s and medium are found very simply with the help of the generalized Hi
lbert boundary value method. In particular, it is found that a uniform
stress state applied at infinity will induce constant states of stres
ses within inclusions similar to that of only one inclusion embedded i
n medium. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
