Results of cross-sectional and follow-up studies of samples of male po
pulations aged 35-54 years from 6 different cities were compared with
results of morphological studies of coronary arteries (autopsy materia
l) of men aged 20-59 years from the same locations. The following vari
ables were used for characterization of epidemiological situation: lev
els of risk factors, nutritional habits, prevalences of coronary heart
and cerebrovascular diseases, mortality and morbidity due to coronary
heart disease, According to variables reflecting epidemiological situ
ation, populations were divided into 3 groups - with high, intermediat
e acid low risk (degree of danger of epidemiological situation). Analy
sis of association between estimate of epidemiological situation and s
everity of atherosclerotic lesions according to autopsy data showed th
at the degree of danger of epidemiological situation determined extent
of atherosclerotic changes and prevalence of coronary stenoses.
