F. Vidal et al., SPHERICAL ION KINETIC SIMULATIONS OF DT IMPLOSIONS, Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics, 52(4), 1995, pp. 4568-4571
The implosion of the DT plasma in an ablatively driven glass microball
oon was simulated with a spherical ion kinetic code. The ion velocity
distribution functions were strongly non-Maxwellian, and mostly deplet
ed of fast ions. A high viscosity contributed to fuel heating, while l
arge ion heat fluxes towards the pusher strongly cooled the fuel. This
latter kinetic effect may explain in part why hydrodynamic simulation
s usually predict higher neutron yields than are measured.
