B. Kristensen et al., SELF-INDUCED BACTEREMIA - CASE-REPORT, APMIS. Acta pathologica, microbiologica et immunologica Scandinavica, 103(6), 1995, pp. 475-476
We describe a patient with perforated appendicitis who postoperatively
suffered repeated episodes of shaking chills and temperature spikes.
Initial blood cultures yielded growth of Flavobacterium meningosepticu
m, Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas paucimobilis, and succeeding blo
od cultures growth of Pseudomonas acidoverans. These bacteria in combi
nation led to a suspicion of self-inoculation of contaminated water th
rough an intravenous catheter. Antibiotic treatment had no effect on t
he symptoms, which only ceased when the intravenous catheter was remov
ed.
