This paper describes briefly the history and current development of ma
rine civil engineering in Japan. It contains descriptions of several r
epresentative marine structures completed recently or under constructi
on to illustrate state-of-the-art Japanese marine civil engineering. T
he structures include port cities, offshore airport, fishing ports, an
d waste sites on. offshore artificial islands, as well as permanent se
a crossings (roads, bridges, and submerged tunnels), and offshore oil
storage bases. Some requirements to be accommodated by future marine s
tructures are also presented in this paper.
