Abstract
The PMN survey revealed a total of 36 640 sources at 5 GHz over 4.51 s teradians of the sky to a limiting flux density of 35 mJy. Included in this sample was a class of sources not yet well understood or charact erized: the ''close'' double-lobed radio galaxies, taken here to have angular sizes in the range 0.'' 25 < theta < 2.'' 0. We have made R an d I band optical identification attempt on such sources. In addition t o ''close'' doubles we have made optical and radio maps of candidates for possible Einstein Ring gravitational lens systems as well as sourc es of multiple structure as seen by the VLA snapshots. We detect optic al identifications to 76% of the sources to a limiting magnitude of R similar to 23.5. Completeness of optical identifications is greater th an 96% with a reliability of 94%.
