The activity Of erythrocyte lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was studied in
normal individuals, type 1 diabetics and insulin treated diabetics. T
he activity of LDH was found to be significantly increased in diabetic
state, however, insulin treatment restored the activity to normal lev
el. The increased LDH activity in diabetes compensates the demand for
NAD+ by glyceraldehyde-3-phosphtate dehydrogenase, the activity of whi
ch has also been found to be elevated in diabetes mellitus.
