A thorough knowledge of shoulder anatomy remains paramount for the ort
hopaedic surgeon to ensure successful outcomes following arthroscopic
shoulder surgery. This article reviews shoulder anatomy relevant to th
e arthroscopist including the glenohumeral joint and subacromial space
. In addition, acromioclavicular joint anatomy, surface anatomy, and n
eurovascular structures at risk relative to commonly used portals are
discussed. Shoulder arthroscopy has enhanced and refined our knowledge
of shoulder anatomy by allowing the visualization of intra-articular
and subacromial structures in situ.
