Me. Brewster et G. Beylkin, A MULTIRESOLUTION STRATEGY FOR NUMERICAL HOMOGENIZATION, Applied and computational harmonic analysis, 2(4), 1995, pp. 327-349
Homogenization may be defined as an analysis in which we construct equ
ations describing coarse-scale behavior of the solution while ignoring
fine-scale detail. This work concerns a multiresolution strategy for
homogenization of differential equations. As the first step towards a
more general treatment of nonlinear ODEs and PDEs, we consider the hom
ogenization via multiresolution analysis (MRA) of systems of linear OD
Es with variable coefficients and forcing terms. We develop an efficie
nt numerical approach which generates the coefficients of the homogeni
zed equation. As one of the examples we treat wave propagation in a st
ratified medium. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
