Recementing a femoral prosthesis into a retained cement mantle was don
e during revision total hip arthroplasty in 15 patients using ultrason
ic tools to reshape the existing cement mantle, Early complications su
ch as bone perforation or fracture were avoided, The 2-year followup i
n 4 patients revealed no adverse effect on the bone-cement interface a
s judged radiographically. One patient had rerevision for instability
at 1 year after operation, Indications for this technique include isol
ated failure of the cement-prosthesis interface, femoral component fra
cture, or isolated acetabular revision in which exposure needs, instab
ility, leg length inequality, or femoral-head size dictated change of
the femoral component.
