Highly symmetrical complexes MCl[P(C7H7)(3)] (M=Rh (3a), Ir (3b); poin
t symmetry C-3v) have been synthesized which contain tri(1-cyclohepta-
2,4,6-trienyl)phosphane (1) as a tetradentate tripod ligand. According
to the X-ray structure analysis of 3a, the metal occupies the center
of a trigonal bipyramid with Cl and P in the axial positions and three
double bonds forming the equatorial plane. Chloride abstraction from
3a by AgBF4 leads to Rh[P(C7H7)(3)](BF4-)-B-+ (6a).
