Abstract
Bartonella henselae expresses pill phenotypically similar to type 4 pi li. B. henselae pilus expression undergoes phase variation with multip le passages. Low-passage-number, piliated B. henselae adhered to and i nvaded HEp-2 cells to a greater extent than did multiply passaged B. h enselae with reduced pilus expression. Pill may be a pathogenic determ inant for Bartonella species.
